Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has revealed that Virgin Van Dijk is fit to play after recovering from illness. However, Klopp is currently facing the challenge of being without Trent Alexander-Arnold for the next few weeks due to a knee injury. He is the latest in a long line of injured players at Anfield, as Dominik Szoboszlai (hamstring), Andrew Robertson (shoulder), Kostas Tsimikas (collarbone), Stefan Bajcetic (calf), Thiago Alcantara (hip), Ben Doak (knee), and Joel Matip (ACL) all remain in the treatment room and won't be available in the near future.
In addition to also being without Salah for both legs of the tie, Japanese international Wataru Endo is unavailable due to Asian Cup commitments.
Fulham's squad is also at maximum capacity due to AFCON call-ups, with Nigerian duo Calvin Bassey and Alex Iwobi joining their national teams, along with Senegal's Fode Ballo-Toure, who has struggled to secure playing time.
There are no new injury concerns for the team from London, but Adama Traore (thigh) and Tim Ream (calf) were absent from the last game due to injuries and are unlikely to feature.
Jurgen Klopp's side, who sit top of the Premier League, are favourites to lift the first piece of domestic silverware on offer, and will be eyeing a strong result to take to Craven Cottage for the second leg in a fortnight's time.
Liverpool go into this match full of confidence, having beaten Arsenal in the FA Cup over the weekend, but they will be without the injured Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah, who is away with Egypt at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Fulham have never won a major trophy and face an uphill task to reach the final at Wembley next month, but pushed Liverpool all the way at Anfield when these sides met in the League earlier this season.
The Reds are fighting on four fronts this term as they top the Premier League, are into the Europa League 16 and beat Arsenal to reach the FA Cup fourth round at the weekend, but the EFL Cup is the closest trophy within their reach as they need now only defeat the Cottagers over two legs to reach the final itself.
However, despite Jurgen Klopp’s team being favourites, Marco Silva’s side will have confidence of running them close; Fulham almost won at Anfield recently, leading 3-2 into the final stages before a late turnaround saw Liverpool triumph 4-3. With no Mohamed Salah or Wataru Endo, options are stretched for the hosts of the first leg. The same, though, can be said for the visitors with Alex Iwobi among those missing.
Liverpool are without long-term absentees Thiago Alcantara, Stefan Bajcetic, Andy Robertson, Kostas Tsimikas and Joel Matip. Wataru Endo is at the Asian Cup and Mohamed Salah has left for the Africa Cup of Nations. Dominik Szoboszlai is also out with a shorter-term hamstring injury, while Trent Alexander-Arnold is also now sidelined. The latter’s absence means either Conor Bradley could start right-back or Owen Beck on the left, with Joe Gomez switching flanks according to that choice.
Fulham will be missing Adama Traore and Tim Ream, both injured, while the trio of Calvin Bassey, Alex Iwobi and Fode Ballo-Toure are likewise at the Afcon. Otherwise they are well set and Silva may just need to decide which two of Willian, Harry Wilson and Bobby DeCordova Reid start on the flanks.
Liverpool's injury list remains unchanged after the win over Arsenal with eight first team players missing for this game. Captain Virgil van Dijk has recovered from illness, but Klopp is unlikely to risk him. Fulham have three players away on AFCON duty with Calvin Bassey, Fode Ballo-Toure and Alex Iwobi all missing, and USMNT defender Tim Ream still out.
Liverpool are strong favourites to secure a first-leg win over Marco Silva's visitors and they cruised to a 5-1 Anfield victory over West Ham in the previous round. A win for Klopp would maintain Liverpool's momentum at the start of 2024, following wins over Newcastle and Arsenal, and the Reds secured a 4-3 home Premier League win over Fulham in December.
The Reds are having a brilliant season and Jurgen Klopp's side come into the clash on the back of their impressive 2-0 win at Arsenal in the FA Cup third round on Sunday afternoon.
Liverpool are top of the Premier League, are into the Europa League knockout stages, into the FA Cup fourth round and now they've got their eyes set on winning the Carabao Cup for a record-extending 10th time.
Klopp's men beat West Ham 5-1 in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals and they'll be hoping they can take a similar advantage to Craven Cottage for the second leg in a couple of weeks.
Fulham pulled off a brilliant 2-1 win against Arsenal in their last Premier League outing and they followed that up with a 1-0 win against Rotherham in the FA Cup third round. Marco Silva's side still find themselves 13th in the league, however, and they'll be well aware of the importance of winning major silverware for the first time.
Without Salah and Alexander-Arnold, the front three will be critical. A combination of Cody Gakpo, Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz, and Diogo Jota will both need to bring creativity and goals. Klopp may need to experiment with defenders without Andrew Robertson and Alexander-Arnold but a cup match is a great time to do it.
Without Alex Iwobi who is on international duty with Nigeria, Fulham's creativity will take a hit. While Tom Cairney can step in and do a job most of the load will fall to Raul Jimenez and Andreas Pereira. With one goal and four assists in the league this season, Pereira has been key to Fulham's attack and taking charge of set plays,
Virgil van Dijk missed Sunday's FA Cup win at Arsenal through illness but the defender is expected to return to the starting lineup in midweek. Young Jarell Quansah could drop out of the team. Left-backs Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimkas remain out of action, so Joe Gomez will continue in the team.
Klopp previously ruled Dominik Szoboszlai out of the Arsenal trip and this game with a hamstring problem, while Stefan Bajectic, Thiago Alcantara, Joel Matip and Ben Doak are also sidelined. Marco Silva has no fresh injury concerns from Friday's victory over Rotherham, although both Adama Traore and Tim Ream were absent and neither player is expected to return at Anfield.
